|At Fort Lee School No. 2, we embrace the philosophy “Children First.” Our student-centered approach to learning engages children in a manner that creates enthusiasm for learning while fulfilling the rigors of our district curricular requirements. Data derived from district and state testing assists teachers in planning programs that address the diverse academic needs of our student population. Grade level goals developed through this process provide a focus for individual skill development that is facilitated through a differentiated approach to teaching and learning. |
At School 2, we are committed to insuring the success of all students. Our building mission is fueled by the notion that all children can learn. Teachers are working together to unpack the essential learning elements each child will need in order to meet the criteria set by district and state learning standards. Using a backwards design model, they work collaborative to develop assessments that will inform planning and teaching. Incremental benchmark testing occurs on an ongoing basis to monitor student progress towards the intended goals and enables staff to make instructional adjustments as necessary that will support yearly academic growth. Our Professional Learning Community is committed to embedding intervention strategies, when necessary, to support and enrich student progress so “No Child Will Be Left Behind.”
Our K-2 Literacy Collaborative initiative has been underway for five years at School 2. The ongoing staff development commitment has provided a forum for teachers to study the complexities of teaching literacy. Reading, writing and oral language uses are integrated with other content specific themes. This integration helps students to see connections between core concepts and grasp the importance of literacy as a lifelong tool for learning. Teachers work together with coaches and mentors to support each others work in this process. As students are moving into the upper elementary grades, teachers in grades 3-6 work closely with the district to guarantee a curriculum that supports the balanced literacy initiative found in the earlier grades. Our district staff development plan of action has provided the necessary support so our programs will spiral through the upper grades and guarantee skill development from introduction to mastery.
Math and Science programs offer a scope and sequence that broadens children’s ability to think. Our commitment to meeting the spiraling expectations at each grade level includes an exploration for knowledge with conceptual and procedural understanding. Daily practice enables us to expand our students’ vocabulary, articulate process and continue to demonstrate their proven success in problem solving. Programs adopted, such as FOSS Science Inquiry, utilize a constructivist approach to learning that enables students to experience concepts through a hands-on approach to learning.
Every effort is made to provide learning opportunities that will enable our young learners to see education as a tool for future success. Special area course offerings, such as art, music, physical education and technology, enrich and reinforce workplace readiness skills and personal wellness techniques. Cross-curricular learning opportunities enhance daily practice by providing experiences that make connections to real life applications. Content covered in these areas of study promote our students’ enthusiasm for lifelong learning. The hands-on application enables students to become engaged in a meaningful way and makes special area offerings a valuable component to the academic environment.
School No. 2 enjoys a richness derived from its diverse student population. Daily interactions and our immersion in various cultural festivities, bilingual and ESL programs, as well as World Language studies, enables us to cultivate an appreciation for individual differences and develop comfort in our commonalities as we network in our daily activities. The dedicated staff focuses special attention to the details which impact each learner and works tirelessly to find supportive strategies when needed. Add our recent focus on issues aligned with Character Education, School No. 2 clearly demonstrates a daily commitment to our central theme, “Children First.”
All of our efforts are driven by our core commitment to establish clear goals for our work. In our view, these goals should be framed with student outcomes in mind, guaranteeing a viable curriculum that will provide leverage for next step learning, as well as insuring a focus on the social/emotional needs of our children.
All of our efforts come together through a strong partnership with our parent community. These community ties are nurtured through school-based committees, newsletters, conferences, and active parent involvement. By sharing the same goals and aspirations, we are able to join together to provide solid student-centered support. As a result of our mutual commitment, students at School No. 2 hear a united voice that echoes “education is important.” This steadfastly supports their positive growth, development and academic success.
